I have learned so much from visiting and working with my contacts in the US as to how to develop fully fledged estate planning practices in their own right, rather than as a bolt on to other areas of law.
It also gives me the privilege of meeting global leaders and icons at legal events such as Arnie to provide the nspiration and the drive to keep on improving and I love passing that knowledge on within our estate planning sector here in the UK.
Arnie mentioned in his talk don't have a Plan B as it means you've already given up on your Plan A which is an interesting thought so what is your Exit Plan?
The one innovation that changed my life
We try and introduce one significant innovation in our business every year. In January 2019 we introduced the 4 Day Week and increased salaries the same time. This was before the pandemic and before this became a normal topic of conversation.
Apparently we the first firm in the world to do both simultaneously.
It is singly the best thing I have ever done in business. It transformed our perception regionally, nationally and even globally with articles and interviews in the press and on radio in countries as far apart as India, Australia and the US. I still get requests to lecture or present on this subject to this very day.
Innovation at its best, no matter how large, small or incremental, can make you stand out and become a better business person. What can we do in your business to stand out?
An immensely proud moment
I was on holiday in Florida when I was told I had been voted “Industry Champion” by my peers at The British Wills & Probate Awards in October 2022.
These awards are always considered the Oscars of our profession and as this vote was open to anyone in the sector, I was absolutely to have been selected against very tough competition and some brilliant individuals.
So the image here is me at Kennedy Space Centre, surrounded by NASA rockets, linking up via iPhone to the Awards in Birmingham and trying to give a speech and a thank you. My family were standing nearby and so were lots of American tourists wondering what the hell is going on!
To receive any award is always a delight but this one meant as much as any accolade I’ve ever had. I’m just grateful to be part of a great sector of people and I’m always happy to share any success with our team and those that have supported me on this long journey.
As an aside, I still have friends in our sector who tell me that this was the most memorable presentation of an award because of the backdrop they have ever seen. A happy moment that will live with me forever.

Sir Richard on our 30th anniversary
It is always a privilege to meet and engage with those you look up to.
I was invited to meet Sir Richard Branson in Dublin as we were both at the same event and our conversation was very personal and enjoyable.
The day we met was exactly 30 years to the day I started out in business as a self employed young man and Sir Richard commented how difficult it is to be in business for 3 years let alone 30.
They say never meet your heroes but this was definitely a highlight of my business career.
